A Prayer Made Flesh (2025 Advent)

A Prayer Made Flesh

Philippians 4:4–7“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!... And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This passage in Philippians is one of the most highlighted verses in my Bible — the ink faded from the number of times I’ve come back to it. It’s become a place of return for me, a steady reminder when joy feels far away.

Rejoicing doesn’t come as naturally as it once did. As a child, it was easy — laughter came freely, the world felt safe, and joy seemed endless. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve found that joy sometimes must be chosen. It isn’t always a spontaneous outburst; sometimes, it’s a quiet surrender.

That’s what makes Paul’s words so powerful. He wasn’t writing these from comfort or peace. He was in prison — chained, confined, and uncertain of his future. And still, he says, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” Paul understood something deeper: joy isn’t about circumstance, it’s about presence. God’s presence.

Eckhart Tolle wrote, “Whatever the present moment contains; accept it as if you had chosen it.” I like to think that God works in that truth. God has chosen the moment, and because of that, I can rest in it. I can rejoice not because everything is right, but because God is with me in whatever it is.

Recently, my grandson and I were watching a documentary about the F5 tornado that tore through Joplin, Missouri. One man described a loved one who had died in that storm as “a prayer made flesh.” Those words stopped me in my tracks. What a way to be remembered — to live in such a way that your very being becomes a living prayer.  If we could each embody that — peace, love, forgiveness, and gratitude — we’d reflect the heart of Philippians 4. Rejoicing wouldn’t be forced; it would simply flow from the presence of God within us.

Maybe that’s the invitation this Advent season; to let your life become a prayer made flesh. To rejoice, not because life is easy, but because God is here.
